The Importance of Tattoo Aftercare

There is hardly a more dramatic symbol of self expression than having a tattoo. The aftercare of your tattoo during the healing process is extremely important for the preservation of your tattoo. Taking into consideration that getting a tattoo is a pretty costly exercise, not to mention that it is fairly permanent, it makes sense to preserve this investment as well as possible.

Always ensure that the aftercare products that you use during the healing process, are specifically formulated for tattoo healing. Avoid products that contains the following ingredients, as these will delay the healing process and will damage your tattoo on the long run.

Petroleum • All Fragrances • Tea Tree Oil • Lanolin • Propellants • Vaseline

These aftercare guidelines are compiled by successful tattoo artists, but I encourage you to talk to your tattoo artist about the aftercare of your tattoo for specific instructions.

First let’s deal with what NOT to do during tattoo aftercare.

  • Do not re-bandage the tattoo.
  • Do not apply Vaseline, lanolin or petroleum based products.
  • Do not apply alcohol.
  • Do not rub, scratch or pick at the tattoo.
  • Do not expose the tattoo to direct sunlight, swim or soak in sauna, steam bath or bathtub for two weeks.
  • Be sure clothing touching your tattoo is clean and soft.

Here are the basic instructions of what should be Done during tattoo healing and aftercare.

First of all it is very important that you realize that getting a tattoo is similar to getting minor surgery done. Your tattoo may bleed a bit at first, but it should stop within a couple of hours.
It is recommended that you keep the bandage that your artist applied, on for 24 hours, but it should be kept on for at least 3 to 5 hours. (If the bandage comes off by itself within that time period, do not re-bandage please!)

If the bandage sticks to the tattoo, soak the area with luke warm water until the bandage loosens. Remove very carefully.

Now carefully wash the tattoo with a mixture of luke warm water and a mild antibacterial soap. Wash with your fingers, never use a cloth on a healing tattoo. Rinse with clean cold water and pat dry with a clean towel. Let the skin dry completely.

Apply a thin layer of recommended lotion to speed up healing and preserve the colors and design of your tattoo. Take care not to use too much as this will clog the tattoo and prevent it from healing.

This procedure should be followed 3 to 4 times per day for approximately ten days.

Around the fifth day, your tattoo may start to itch, scab and peel. This is normal. Do not pick or peel the skin away. Let it fall off naturally.

During this time you might see a slight fading of the colors in your tattoo, but don’t panic, as soon as the healing is complete, the colors should be as vibrant as ever.

During the two weeks that your tattoo is healing, stay away from pools, the ocean, hot tubs and most importantly, the sun. The healing tattoo should not be exposed to the sun at all. You are allowed to shower though.

After the healing process is completed, make sure that you always cover your tattoo with a good sun block ( Try to use at least SPF of 30 that provides both UVA and UVB protection, and it does not matter if you choose a cheaper brand, they are all the same) as exposure to the sun is the major cause of tattoo fading.

Here are a few tips to remember:

  • Always make sure that your hands are clean when tending to your healing tattoo.
  • Make sure that the towels you use, are clean
  • Make sure that your clothes that will be touching your tattoo, is clean and loose.
  • Change your bedding every two to three days during the healing process.
